PERSISTENCE by several people from many parts of Australia came to fruition when the great grand masters category of dragon boat racing was introduced in April.
Ross Boyce from Manly Dragons, was a driving force in promoting the cause over the past 18 months and coaching the Queensland Great Grand Dragons i n preparation for the national
championships.
The Queensland Great Grand Dragons came second in the grand final, bringing home a trophy and silver medals.
‘‘Dragon boating has strong representation in the masters 40-50 years and grand masters 50-60 years,’’ Mr Boyce said.
‘‘This new category provides a platform for paddlers over 60 years to continue to compete in
state, national and, hopefully soon, in international championships without having to paddle
down with the younger crews.’’
The passionate paddlers fought long and hard to gain acceptance from the dragon boat powers, but made their point on behalf of those aged 60 and over.
