DRAGONS COME TO LIFE
February 2008-02-09

Members and guests of the Manly Dragon Boat Club recently participated in a bright and colourful “Dotting of the Eye” ceremony to commemorate the blessing of two new dragon boats.  Resplendent in the traditional gowns of a Taoist Priest, Sister Linda Yuen from the Evergreen Taoist Church presided over the Blessing Ceremony to awaken the dragons and bring them to life so that they can command good winds and safe waters to carry the boat to victory.
The ceremony conducted at the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club on Saturday 9 February was the official launch for the two new dragon boats plus trailer purchased with a grant from the State Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Members of the Manly Dragon Boat Club were also blessed to ensure safe and successful paddling before launching the dragon boats into the water and taking them for a paddle in the Manly Boat Harbour.
Dragon Boat racing is an exciting sport suitable for paddlers of all ages and skill levels.  With a team of 20 paddlers plus a sweep at the rear to steer the boat and a drummer at the front to beat the stroke rate, it can be a visual spectacle for all to admire.

The Manly Dragon Boat Club is just one year old and has already competed in a number of regattas and now proudly displays their trophies at their home base at the WMYC Clubhouse.

With support from Cr Peter Cumming and Dept of Sport and Recreation the club has been able to purchase a shade marquee, safety equipment and training and development for their coaching team.
